Art
Center of the life city and maximum urbanistic and architectural complex in Venice is plaza St. Mark, that draws name from the basilica risen in the sec. IX and devoted to the homonym saint. The basilica, that constitutes the tallest example of Venetian-Byzantine art, in which following styles also melt him (Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance), you/he/she was reconstructed in the sec. XI on the model of the church of the SSs. Apostles of Constantinople (now destroyed). To Greek cross, with five domes, you/he/she is preceded from an atrium that it surrounds the whole western part; in the sec. XIII the domes were enriched of shining decorations. The façade, from the crowning Gothic rich in pinnacles and cuspidi (sec. XV), you/he/she is horizontally divided from a terrace with balcony; in the inferior part they are five deep arcades, after all to which open as many portals, with notable sculptural reliefs of Byzantine taste; on the terrace they are situated the famous four horses in gilded copper brought from Constantinople, held Hellenistic work (sec. III TO. C.). Also the sides of the basilica are adorned by precious reliefs and sculptures, among which, on the southern side, the group in porfido of the Tetrarchis (sec. IV). The atrium, separated in lived by acute arcs, you/he/she is surmounted by cupolette dressed again by shining mosaics of Venetian-Byzantine taste (1220-50) with histories of the Old Will. The inside is to Greek cross, with five domes poggianti on great blows arconi; every arm is separated in three aisles from colonnades that they sustain the matroneis. The domes, the tall part of the walls, the sottarchis of the aisles have entirely covered of mosaics in wide part of the sec. XII-XIII (with back remaking), that constitute a Byzantine meaningful synthesis of the iconografia. The presbytery, raised again, you/he/she is surmounted by the altar, adorned by a rich ciborium supported by columns istoriate (perhaps of the sec. XIII). Behind the altar it is the famous gold shovel, splendid example of Venetian-Byzantine oreficeria (sec. X-XIV), formed by panels to gold foil adorned of enamels and climbed on in a thin frame. In the apse it opens the bronzy door of the sacristy of I. Sansovino. The Treasure of the basilica is rich above all of objects of Byzantine oreficeria: pissidi, carafes, wine glasses, patene (from the sec. X to the XIV) and decorated bindings with reliefs, enamels and nielli; among the most important pieces I am the crown of Leo Vi (sec. X) and the paliotto of St. Mark, in gilded silver and worked to start. In front of the church the characteristic bell tower raises him, tall 98 meters, reconstructed after the 1902 collapse. To the base the loggetta of the Sansovino supports him, elegantly decorated (1537).
