In addition to its religious significance (Christ’s ascension to Heaven), the \u201cFesta della Sensa\u201d in Venice also had great civic value, as it commemorated two important events for the Republic:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
-the first occurred on May 9, 1000, when Doge Pietro II Orseolo saved the populations of Dalmatia threatened by the Slavs: the date marked the beginning of Venetian expansion in the Adriatic<\/p>\n\n\n\n
-the second event is linked to the year 1177, when, under Doge Sebastiano Ziani, Pope Alexander III and Emperor Frederick Barbarossa signed the Peace of Venice, a treaty that put an end to the centuries-old dispute between the Papacy and the Empire<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the occasion of this Festival, the rite of the marriage of the Sea took place in which the predominance of Venice over the seas was symbolically reaffirmed<\/p>\n\n\n\n
