In addition to its religious significance (Christ’s ascension to Heaven), the “Festa della Sensa” in Venice also had great civic value, as it commemorated two important events for the Republic:
-the first occurred on May 9, 1000, when Doge Pietro II Orseolo saved the populations of Dalmatia threatened by the Slavs: the date marked the beginning of Venetian expansion in the Adriatic
-the second event is linked to the year 1177, when, under Doge Sebastiano Ziani, Pope Alexander III and Emperor Frederick Barbarossa signed the Peace of Venice, a treaty that put an end to the centuries-old dispute between the Papacy and the Empire
On the occasion of this Festival, the rite of the marriage of the Sea took place in which the predominance of Venice over the seas was symbolically reaffirmed
