The graceful piece of iron at the bow of the gondola is called pettine, or fero da prova, or dolfin.
It works as a balancing element for this typical Venetian boat.
The six prongs (called rebbi) on the front of the pettine represent the six district (called Sestieri) of
Venice (Cannaregio, San Polo, Santa Croce, Dorsoduro, San Marco, Castello), while the one on the
rear represents the Island of the Giudecca.
Between these prongs, some gondolas show three decoration representing the only three bridges
crossing the Grand Canal (ponte degli Scalzi, ponte di Rialto, ponte dell’Accademia).
